Toussaint Maheu
Coal miner
The father of the Maheu family and one of Germinal's central characters. A good man worn to the bone by decades underground, he represents the dignity and endurance of the working class. He initially resists Étienne's strike call, then commits to it fully. He dies when soldiers fire on the strikers — shot from behind while trying to flee.
Père de la famille Maheu dans Germinal. Homme juste et usé par des décennies sous terre. Il rejoint finalement la grève et meurt sous les balles de la troupe.
Lean, hollow-cheeked, with the stooped posture of a man who has spent his life bent double underground, and the steady eyes of a man who has never complained.
