Mine owner (Jean-Bart)
The owner of the smaller Jean-Bart mine in Germinal, and Hennebeau's brother-in-law. An honest, energetic man who genuinely cares for his workers but cannot survive the strike — he is forced to sell his mine to the Company at a ruinous price. His ruin illustrates Zola's point about the inevitable triumph of corporate capital over individual enterprise.
Propriétaire de la fosse Jean-Bart dans Germinal, beau-frère d'Hennebeau. Homme honnête ruiné par la grève, contraint de vendre sa mine à la Compagnie.
Vigorous, broad, with a red face and the direct manner of a man who built something himself and is proud of it.
